Alicia Saldenha (pronounced sal-dáy-nya) is not what one would expect. From her name to her background to her music, she is unique, surprising and intriguing. The soul and funk scenes have been largely dominated by artists from North America and the UK. The world is probably not looking for the next Voice to come out of the Caribbean twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. An even greater surprise would be to find it in Japan. Yet, here is Alicia Saldenha, defying expectations.
Without the advantage of wealth or connections, but with a fierce determination and belief in her destiny, Alicia left her native Trinidad in her teens to study languages at university in Europe and then in Japan. At this time she already had a career as an accomplished actress and singer, having appeared in plays, operas and musicals in Trinidad and in the UK.
In Japan, however, she blossomed as a solo artist, falling in love with jazz, soul and later, funk. A full-time university student, Alicia still managed to perform regularly and eventually began to compose her own songs. She also sang in Thailand, the United States and made guest appearances at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and at the Nice Jazz Festival in France with George Clinton and the P-Funks.
Her music is rich with her multicultural background and experiences - the smooth and mellow of jazz, the organic and heart of soul, the growl, strut and sexy of funk and the joie de vivre of calypso and reggae. Her performances in Japan also mark her as a true pioneer - in her music, her band members and her audiences, she is breaking down barriers between ethnic groups, languages and cultures, bringing them together through the power that music, above all, inspires.
Moreover, Alicia is succeeding in Japan, in an environment that is generally closed to "foreigners" unless they are signed to major record labels. Against the odds, as an independent artist, Alicia Saldenha is quickly becoming Osaka's number one soul vocalist. Japanese and international acts alike are hearing the buzz about the rising star and are seeking her out for collaborations.
She has performed, for example, with renowned jazz steel drummer, Othello Molineaux, on his Japan tours. Japanese indie nu-jazz group, indigo jam unit, invited her to be part of their 2009 Japan tour. In fact, the group then invited her to record an album together. This project should be out in 2011. Additionally, Alicia has also been performing throughout Japan with legendary bassist, Paul Jackson, of Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters.
Alicia Saldenha may be just at the start of her career as a recording artist - she is currently completing her debut CD. Yet already, comparisons to Roberta Flack, Mini Ripperton and Erykah Badu abound in reviews of her voice and singing. On stage, too, she is pure dynamite, capturing with no props or elaborate stage sets, the fire and excitement of the funk groups of the 1970s. Yet while her music contains this old-skool sensibility, Alicia is definitely of the present moment. Here again she defies classification - something new and fresh with the spirit of the past.
Just as she boldly left Trinidad as a teenager with little more than her talent and faith in her destiny, Alicia jumped on a plane to New York early last year to begin recording her debut album with some of the city's finest musicians. With a PhD from Kobe University in cultural studies, this was probably not the expected course. Yet Alicia delights in taking these left turns, in making her own paths and following her own dreams.
The album has been a long-time coming, the songs written while she was studying at university and working part-time in order to pay for the expensive endeavor. An old-skool girl, Alicia wanted the album recorded live in the studio, in the vein of some of her favorite funk and soul artists like Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown and Joss Stone. This is no over-produced, auto-tuned studio product. This is raw, organic heart and soul. You will hear beautiful ballads, sensual soul tracks, roaring foot-stompers and even funky-reggae.

プロフィールアリシア・サルデイニャは、彼女の名前にはじまり、彼女の音楽性を育んできた環境も含めて異色で興味深い。アメリカやイギリスのアーティストが席巻するソウル・ファンクシーンに、まさかカリブ海に浮かぶ双子の島国トリニダード・トバゴ共和国から次の歌姫が誕生するとは、おそらく誰も想像していなかったでしょう。その彼女が今、日本にいるのです。
お金も人脈も持たず、しかし大いなる志と自分の運命を信じる力をもって、まだティーンだった彼女は故郷トリニダート島を後にし、まずヨーロッパに渡り、その後日本の大学で言語を勉強することになります。日本に来る頃には、トリニダードやイギリスの芝居、オペラ、ミュージカルで女優、歌手として既に一定のキャリアを築いていました。
ジャズとソウルの虜になり、やがてファンクへも大きく傾倒していく中で、来日以降、彼女のソロアーティストとしての才能は一気に開花します。一般の大学生として学業に励みながらも、演奏活動をコンスタントに続けるなか、彼女は自分で作曲もするようにもなりました。そして、日本を飛び出し、タイ、アメリカで歌うだけでなく、イタリアのウンブリア・ジャズフェスティバルへも参加、そしてフランスのニースジャズフェスティバルではジョージ・クリントン(George Clinton)率いるPファンク(P-Funk)との共演を果たすなど、その活動の場を大きく広げています。
ジャズのなめらかでメローなメロディー、ソウルの優しい癒しの味わい、ファンクの力強く時に弾むようなそしてセクシーなサウンド、カリブ海音楽やレゲエが唄う生きる喜び。さまざまな文化を彼女が直接肌で感じてきたことで、彼女の音楽はこれら全てに包まれています。そして来日以降、音楽がインスパイアするパワーを通して、音楽、バンドメンバー、オーディエンスとの民族や言語、文化の壁を乗り越えてきました。そんな彼女は真のパイオニアといえるでしょう。
大手音楽レーベルと契約していなければ外国人には排他的とされる日本でも、アリシアは成功しています。無所属アーティストとして大阪の女性ナンバーワンボーカルへとめざましく成長しつつあります。芸能関係者の間でも広く噂され、彼女とさまざまなシーンでコラボしたいとの呼び声は高まっています。
例えば、かの有名なジャズ・スティールドラム奏者オセロ・モリノー(Othello Molineaux)とも、彼の来日ツアー中に共演しました。そして日本のインディーnu-jazzグループであるindigo jam unitに招かれ、彼らの2009年のツアーで一部共演しています。このindigo jam unitからは彼らの誘いを受け、アルバムレコーディングへも参加しました。このアルバムは2011年にはリリース予定です。さらには、ハービー・ハンコック＆ヘッドハンターズ(Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters)の伝説的なベーシスト、ポール・ジャクソン(Paul Jackson)とも日本各地で共演しました。
現在は自身のデビューCDの制作に取り組むアリシアですが、レコーディングアーティストとしてはスタートラインに立ったばかりとも言えるでしょう。CDデビュー前にもかかわらず、その歌声やスタイルについては、これまでロバータ・フロック(Roberta Flack)、ミニー・リパートン(Mini Ripperton)、エリカ・バドゥ(Erykah Badu)らを引き合いに絶賛されたことは枚挙にいとまがありません。ステージでは、小道具や凝った演出など無くても、1970年代のファンクグループが持っていたあの熱気を、彼女の躍動感で十分に引き出しています。同時に、その当時の古き良き時代を感じさせる繊細さが彼女の音楽にはあるのです。彼女はまさに時の人として、どんな枠にも収まらない古き良き時代のスピリットを秘めながらも新鮮な音楽を追い求めているのです。
才能と運命を信じる力だけを持って故郷トリニダード島をあとにした時と同じように、昨年はじめニューヨーク行きの飛行機に飛び乗りました。現地の一流ミュージシャン達と自身のデビューアルバムのレコーディングを行うためでした。神戸大学大学院で博士号を取った経歴の持ち主としては、おそらく誰も予想できなかった展開です。それでも、自分で道を切り拓き自分の夢を追いかける彼女の冒険はこれからも続くでしょう。
このデビューアルバム、実はとても長い年月をかけて形になりました。学生として勉強やアルバイトをする傍らに書いた曲で構成されています。古き良き時代のスピリットをもったアリシアは、このアルバムをスライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーン(Sly and the Family Stone)やジェームス・ブラウン(James Brown)、ジョス・ストーン(Joss Stone)のようなアリシアの愛するファンク・ソウルアーティストのテイストを織り交ぜながら、ライブで収録することを熱望していたのです。よくある、オートチューンスタジオの作品ではなく、優しい癒しのある魂のこもった作品になっています。美しいバラードや官能的なソウルトラックから、突き上げるような低音のリズム、そしてファンキーなレゲエまで、ぜひお楽しみ下さい！
